So this was a pretty hench weekend of drills, workshops and watching the uk and europes finest block the snot out of one another. if you were there for the weekend bootcamp, the euroclash bouts or simply glued to the action on rdtv you’ll have enjoyed roller derby at the freaking highest level.
5 wenches were representing at the bootcamp and we were put through our paces on the track with drills on jammer resilience, blocking and power jam defence. there were two entertaining workshops on league management and how to get through a tourny. and also there was also a dynamic sports academy sesh that turned out to be alot stranger than expected! it was great to feel pushed throughout the day, and to learn such useful skills and knowledge to bring back to our own league.
in the evening it was balls to the wall action in the euroclash bouts, and the wenches were front row for all the action. first up leeds roller dolls brought their a-game to london brawl saints in an incredibly exciting bout that you have to say was one for the books. then the euroclash headliner with the finest skaters from 5 european countries taking on londing brawling; with an amazing start from europe it could have been anyone’s game, and although the challengers did an awesome job skating toe to toe with london, in the end brawling proved why they roll at the tippy top.
sunday was scrim day at the bootcamp and after one more workshop on strategy our girls dug deep on the track to demonstrate the skills we had learnt the day before. the day ended with two of our girls in the top level bout and we can feel proud that we held our own and had just the sweetest time sharing the track with some of our most admired skaters.
Dear london roller girls, thank you for all your hard work, sharing your knowledge, and providing such a successful and exciting weekend of roller derby. it was brills to see so many familiar faces and meet so many more.
…we look forward to rolling with you all again very soon, Gutterball x
