The Portsmouth Roller Wenches’ latest bout was hosted by Swansea City Slayers this Saturday in Wales.

The day started with an epic cherry-popper mixed bout including rookie players from Swansea City Slayers, Oxford Roller Girls and six of our very own Wenches; Up Ann Atom, Wheelma Flintstone, Mini Malice, Tribal Force, Little Phoenix & Dropkick Molly.

Our rookie Wenches were brilliant at blocking, jamming, keeping their teams together and getting the audience involved in cheering them on.

The wonderful Swansea City Slayers have published the awards for the mixed scrim, Dropkick Molly got Best Jammer!

For the main bout, the Wenches were predicted to win against Swansea City Slayers by a score of 180 : 100.

Although both teams beat their predictions, the start of the bout was a bit shaky for the Wenches. An early power jam for the home team meant that the Slayers had a 40 point lead within the first five minutes.

Both teams were clearly skilled and determined to win which meant there were a lot of lead changes through the middle of the first period. Thanks to some solid tactics from Duchess of Crutches (Bench Manager), the Wenches had pulled ahead and were increasing their lead by half time.

In the second period the jams tended to be fast-paced with both the Wenches and the Slayers fielding very strong and agile blockers. Connie Stitch-up (Lineup Manager) fielded excellent skater combinations throughout. It was exciting to see the Wenches forming some unbreakable walls and preventing the opposing jammer from making even her initial pass in multiple jams.

The Wench jammers were nimble and fast, skating straight through the pack, landing apex jumps and generally racking up the points.

Overall, the bout was fairly foul-free for both teams, with few power jams and the maximum amount of players on track for most of the time.

At the final whistle, Portsmouth Roller Wenches had beaten Swansea City Slayers by 214 to 107. It was a fantastic bout, with a brilliant score for both teams, and we’ve already been challenged to a re-match!

Swansea City Slayers were excellent hosts, and even had medals for the awards which went to:

The Wenches are proud to announce that our very own R.I.P. McMurphy has been chosen as the latest Queens of the Sin Bin sponsored skater. The sponsorship is the QOTSB brand’s first signing in their bid to recognise skaters from ‘up and coming’ leagues, and McMurphy now joins a roster of derby household names such as: Kamikaze Kitten, Jack Attack and Rogue Runner.

McMurphy says: “I couldn’t be more proud, happy and honoured to have been asked to join the Queens crew as an endorsed skater. I couldn’t think of a better brand to be associated with; they’re a derby owned business, and this new step to sponsor skaters from up and coming teams shows QOTSB’s commitment to helping develop the roller derby scene from the ground up. I can’t wait to represent both QOTSB and the Wenches in this partnership.

This couldn’t come at a better time for the Portsmouth Roller Wenches as we have already embarked on a hugely ambitious season of challenging bouts, packed into a very busy schedule. I hope this shines a light on what is sure to be the year of the Wench!”

Don’t forget to buy your ticket for our upcoming bout against London Rollergirls BatterC Power; we’ll even have a raffle prize from QOTSB up for grabs.

In other Wench news, we have lots to be happy about!

First of all, congratulations to our fearsome blocker/jammer Hel On who has given birth to a beautiful baby future Wench! We hope to see Hel On back on track soon and we are all very happy for her!

Also last week we had our second brood of Wenchlings pass their minimum skills! Our first practice all together is tonight and we’re all really excited to have expanded the good ship Wench!

One piece of sad Wench news though is that our solid blocker with a booty of steel Atomic Affliction has had to leave the team due to pursuing her career in something important and sciency! She’ll always be a Wench though and we wish her well as she finds a new team to join (please don’t hit us tooo hard if we come up against you in the future, Atomic!) xx

On Sunday 9th September Portsmouth was besieged by Kent Roller Girls. They heralded their arrival with a bombard of Facebook taunts, frivolity and smack talk. Portsmouth Roller Wenches have a lot of love for the KRG, some of us having been tight team mates at epic triple header ‘Hundred Jams War’ in Rouen, France, earlier this year. Therefore, we weren’t scared and welcomed our friends, old and new, with open arms.

Kent proved to be tough and hard hitting opponents with incredibly tight walls, excellent communication and clear strategy. We all commented afterwards how united they seemed as a team, which held them together magnetised on the track and in real danger of threatening our game. However, despite the amount of knocks we all took (including a few scrapes with the wall in our too-small practice space) both teams kept up the fun and laughter banter on-track in a very close and hard fought game.

We also had some real highlights as a team, most notably with some absolutely marvellous play from our newer wenches such as Hot Squeals and Malibash Stacie who finally got to show their stuff in competitive play, but also with flashes of team brilliance and machine-like cohesion that we’ll be critically examining to build upon. On the flipside we had also the impossibly unlucky farcical situation of having TWO of our jammers being felled by toe-stops falling out on them mid-jam! Our own Kiwi superstar Psyclone Destroyer also suffered a sprained shoulder from a hard fall in the game, and we’re sending our healing derby love to her.

Our closed bout conditions mean we unfortunately cannot publically release the score from this game, however you definitely do not want to miss when PRW and KRG go head to head in a public rematch, that we’re crossing all our fingers and toes to happen very soon. We’re just sorry our doors were closed for the initial face-off!
Many, many thanks to the refs and NSOs, some of whom travelled to kindly join us on the day. We couldn’t do any of this without you. Massive love to our friends the Kent Roller Girls for making this one of the friendliest and fun games we’ve had to date.
